It is a rainy day today and the light filtering through the wet windshield highlighted the red in the leaves that were clinging on the wet glass surface. Experimenting with a few filters resulted in this finished product.

happy Friday to all.This is not a recent photo ,but rather one from my sunset photo archives taken in the dayswhen I used to hop in my car and chase a sunset when ever I saw such drama beginning in the evening sky.

Yesterday I had gotten my days mixed up and posted Green Thursday. I had mentioned in the post some ABC Flashcards that I had made for my grandchildren. Today I thought I would post more of the cards.
For today, a page from an uncompleted project. Its fun to play with pictures and I had started creating a counting book for my grandchildren also to be used as a guide to help them id the familiar birds often seen. doubleclick on the tree to count and id the birds. Ducks in tree? yes, Wood Ducks nest in trees.(one Osprey, two White-breasted Nuthatches, three purple Finch , four Wood Ducks, six Northern Cardinals , five great blue heron, seven Evening Grosbeaks, eight Blue Jays, as I had said incomplete
Another way of introducing children to nature was a set of ABC flashcards I made for them.
There are many ways we can teach children about nature. enjoy the teaching and the appreciation that results. Happy Green Thursday.

The yellow in its name might partially qualify this bird for today's meme, but if not then the yellowish background will have to suffice. We often see a Sapsucker in our yard at this time of year. This bird pictured above is a female ;the slight red at its throat gives me cause to call it so.

Earlier this week I posted about a spotted salamander; a handsome yellow spotted creature.http://naturetales.blogspot.com/2009/09/spotted-salamander-for-mellow-yellow.html
We had found it under a rock. Since then we have looked under more rocks and found two more species; a Dusky Salamander and a Red-Backed Salamander
Dusky Salsmsnder sbove . At first we thought the Dusky salamander was a small snake as it was curled under the rock. But then I noticed it had a leg and thought to myself, "That's no snake.Click to enlArge to see the leg on itslower right side.
Red- backed Salamander; I did not focus well on this wiggly little creature but the red on its back was obvious which led me to its id.

Where the Porcupine Stream enters the North Oromocto River. This beautiful view, is not that far away. I must return to this location in the fall when the area will be ablaze with rich autumn colours.

Just back from my morning walk where I encountered this beautiful deer by the river
Each year Common Mergansers nest along our river. I am used to seeing the female Megansers with their broods along the river. This year I have had very few sightings. One day last week while crossing the highway bridge by car I saw a group of them in the river below.. Their reddish heads made their id unmistakable! They only stayed there long enough for me to get thid group photo before they swam away. I have been looking every day since the sighting since but have not seen them again.

ITS harvest time again for all the birds and wildlife that gather their food from Nature's bounty. You may have to click on these pictures to enlarge it to see the three waxwings gathered on the branches of this lush Mountain Ash tree. The berries on our tree in our yard have already disappeared to a flock of hungry Robins on the weekend.

I seldom see a salamander. Yesterday we were looking along an old country road in a dry ditch searching for rocks to strengthen the area where we had put up a fence and my husband overturned a large rock and called out to me. " You better come and look at this!" I had just mentioned to him a few minutes earlier thatI had nothing to post for Mellow Yellow. I was delighted when I saw what he had found and viewed this magnificently designed creature with its yellow spots on black! I have since learned that this is the largest salamander in New Brunswick and the only one of the Salamander species with yellow spots! This species is widely distributed in New Brunswick. As we continued on gathering rocks he found another spotted salamander and a small black snake which probably was a garter snake, that I did not see as I had wandered away from where he was working.

He was 21 years old, many, many years ago. A university student, posted in Germany with the RCAF[Royal Canadian Airforce] for the summer. A cadet in the reserves. He thirsted for adventure.

Today is a most wonderfull day creating beautiful cloud reflections in the river.A soothing beautiful morning walk such as this always makes a significant difference to my blood pressure when I take it upon my return home.
This little sandpiper/plover? wasn't the only one getting wet feet as the incoming tide washed over mine too as I was walking along scanning the shore line of this small Bay of Fundy Beach[Maclaren Beach] looking for beach glass. Finding these little birds there was a bonus! below a semi- palamated Plover
We didn't find any beach glass .

A delicious sugar cookie with a red jam center is my Ruby Tuesday contribution for today. And it being the nature of little children to like cookies this cookie makes me think of my little grandson who frequently told me when he was visiting this summer," I'm hungry for something circly!" This cookie is store bought and not of my making.

I am going to guess that this might be a first year, female, Wilson'''s Warbler using p-454 of David Sibley's[2000] The Sibley Guide to Birds as my reference guide. Any comments on this id would be appreciated
